John Moore asked:

Most people are law abiding car owners who buy car insurance each year without fail as well as pay their road tax and register their vehicles with the Driving and Vehicle License Agency (DVLA). Sadly, there are growing numbers of drivers breaking the law, not paying their car insurance and it is the honest citizens who pay the cost in increased premiums.

The average fine for driving without car insurance is a pathetic £250, hardly a suitable deterrent and only double the amount of a fine for parking on a single yellow line, thousands are avoiding paying and with an influx of foreigners more and more people are driving on our roads without car insurance. With car insurance policies on average twice the amount of the fine, what incentive is there to buy car insurance?

Now is a more important time than ever for the government to tackle the increasing number of people not paying car insurance as the cost of living is increasing and motorists are suffering from rising fuel prices, increased premiums are something motorists can gladly do without. The government could at least charge those avoiding car insurance with more severe fines.

To tackle car insurance dodgers police in town centres are embracing new technology in cameras which scans a number plate and checks if the vehicle is registered with the DVLA in a matter of seconds. With the increasing network of cameras police can then track the vehicle without motor insurance to catch the offender and fine them and possibly taking a stolen vehicle off the road – potentially saving a future accident and therefore an insurance claim. If the vehicle isn’t registered the likelihood is no insurance as you need to register your car with the DVLA to get car insurance. If the car isn’t registered it gives the person immunity from speeding fines and parking fines as well as insurance costs.

It is estimated British motorists pay more than £500 million a year extra on their car insurance – on average an extra £31 each year. The DVLA has previously said that almost a million cars haven’t been registered are on UK roads, almost all of them will also be without car insurance affecting the rest of us honest drivers in increased premiums but also when we need to make a claim when we have an accident with someone without car insurance. Hopeful the government will bring in stronger measures to tackle these car insurance dodgers.

In the mean time you can limit the effect it has on your car insurance premiums by making sure you are paying as little as possible and have the right policy for you. Car comparison sites search the majority of car insurance providers saving you time and possible hundreds of pounds on your current car insurance premiums.

FERMIN
