Is it absolutely necessary to buy insurance when renting a car?

Mike M asked:

I am renting a car for 5 days. I’m not sure if my own personal car insurance covers for a rental, but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t. Its almost $100 for the insurance that they offer! Seems like a trap. Is it absolutely necessary to purchase it? Thanks

Most all car insurances covers rentals. To be sure, call your insurance company and ask. Simple isn’t it?

The $100 buys you overpriced insurance so you would not have to pay a $500 deductible if you got in an accident in the rented car. Your own auto insurance may have a provision to cover this, check with your agent. Additionally, if you have $500 deductible on your regular policy, this means you are prepared to pay the first $500 of any claim. Why should you want zero deductible on a rental?

you should always check if you have any additional coverage on the credit card that you used for the deposit at the rental company. Mastercard provides insurance coverage on rentals.

You are not required to purchase their insurance, however almost all rental companies are going to want some sort of proof the vehicle will be covered elsewhere. If you do not have a credit card that offers this coverage then inquire with your own vehicle insurer. If they won’t then you would be better off buying their insurance, or else be prepared to pay the rental agency the value of the vehicle should you get into an accident, regardless of whether you are at-fault or not.

It depends on your personal car insurance (for the car you drive at home). Most auto insurance packages will cover you even if you’re driving another car. Ask your insurance agent if yours does.

I’ve found some helpful info here too:

    Best regards.
