What insurance is needed for rental car in California?

car insurance
Isabel C asked:

My son leaves Ireland tomorrow Sat 17th Nov to fly to San Diego. He has rented a car to drive to Seattle – everything appears to be arranged. But I want to check he has adequate car insurance that is needed/required? He is over 25 years and has normal Travel Insurance.

Assuming he is using a credit card to pay the rental, check with the card company. .With it he may already be adequately insured.

He would need to check with his personal auto insurance to find out what coverage follows him to a rental car. Every policy is different. He would likely be covered for public liability, but may not be covered fully for any damage to the rental car itself. He should also check if any rental car coverages are offered by the credit card he is using. It may depend on whether he is a resident of Ireland or a resident of the U.S. Also, some credit card coverages kick in only after any personal coverages are exhausted.

He should simply buy insurance from the rental car company. Note: most credit card companies will provide at least the collision damage waiver which will save some money.

Isabel C, I suggest you find a nearby car insurance agent to assist you. Since I live in Arkansas I can’t recommend an agent in California, but here is an website that can help you.

Many credit card companies will cover insurance requirements if you use their credit card to rent the car. However, your son should have checked with his credit card carrier before he left. Once he gets to the counter in the U.S. it will not be practical to check. And since he’s already left Ireland (since today is Sunday 11/18) that probably won’t be helpful information for your son. However, manybe someone else reading this will be helped by this information.

A comparison to whats already out there is good too..

    Hope that helps.
