Can I rent a vehicle without auto insurance?

Lori B asked:

I do not own a car at this time. I will be renting a vehicle to go out of town next weekend. I assumed that I could purchase insurance through the rental agency. After reading the description of the Damage Waiver (which is available for an additional charge), I see that it is NOT insurance. Am I able to rent a vehicle without my own auto coverage? How do I go about this? Please site sources for your anwswers. Thanks!

I don’t know of any rental car agencies that will rent you a car without a policy.

in most places no. the damage waiver you mentioned is to pay your deductible…usually this is more than the cost of the actual car rental

Insurance goes with vehicles, not with drivers. Most of the car rental places are big enough to be self insured, and will cover the cars they rent. They will also offer you additional coverage that wil take care of anything you do that damages the car that isn’t collectible from another at fault party if you want to pay the extra for it. It basically covers their deductible amount.

If you did own a car and have coverage on your car, it would not transfer to anything else you drive.

Most major car rental companies will provide you with liability coverage on your rental! You may have to pay extra, but they do it all the time! It is not required that you own or insure a car before you can rent one! There are many people (mostly in large cities like New York) who do not own a car and when they need one, they rent!

    Create a video blog…instantly.

The damage waiver is the rental companies version of comprehensive and collision – pays for damage to the rental car.

You will probably also have to purchase liability insurance from the rental company as well. It is a separate charge from the damage waiver.

Check the renter’s guide on auto insurance. Here’s a good website to browse for specific answers.

    Lori,
Rental companies DO offer insurance and almost always try to get you to buy it even when you have your own.

Since you don’t have insurance, do you have a credit card? One of the bonuses of most credit cards is that they offer automatic coverage on rentals if you use the card to pay for your auto rental. It saves a good bit because the rental company charge is quite high. It runs between $25-$50 per day EXTRA above the cost of the rental. It is definitely worth charging it on your card and saving that money. Do check with your credit card company to be sure they offer that coverage because not all do although it is pretty common these days.

    Hope that helps.
